Native American, African, European – over the course of time, Argentina’s musical tradition has been nourished by multiple influences. And this tradition is certainly not limited to the tango: it would indeed be a mistake to reduce an astonishingly varied repertoire, which is constantly renewing itself, to a single form of expression – as enchanting as it may be. The programme for this concert, which inaugurates the new season of ADEM with sensitivity and audacity, stands as a shining example of this vitality. From the gallant zamba to the lively chacarera; the uneven rhythms of the gato to the solid form of the tango; from the passion of a fewcopla to the confessions of a ‘simple’ song, the Marcela Arroya quartet takes us to the heart of this fascinating universe, which holds both a magnificent and troubled history, and also plays with compositions and improvisations, complete with arrangements of the traditional standards as well as more recent creations. Ancient folklore, represented notably by the works of Cuchi Leguizamón, rubs up against candombé (afro tango) of the Uruguayan Rubén Rada; the legendary names Juan Falú, Juan Quintero, Peteco Carabajal, Pepe Nuñez embody 'new folk' in this repertoire, complete with several unmissable references to Astor Piazzolla. Marcela Arroyo’s compositions are interspersed throughout this journey, which is animated for the duration by the harmonic shimmer of Pablo Allende’s guitars, the subtle counterpoint of Federico Abraham’s bass and the rhythmic inventiveness of Pablo Lacolla. This is where the poetry of words, the suaveness of vocal and instrumental timbres and the sensuality of dance all merge. Let’s get the ball rolling!
